Movies and Television

Matt Smith is a good Doctor.

I just watched Doctor Who with Matt Smith.  I like him.  And of course, I like Karen Gillan.  In some of the promotional photos, he looked like Robert Smith from The Cure.  Interestingly, Matt Smith's middle name is Robert.  I liked Christopher Eccleston.  There was something about David Tennant that I didn't like.  Maybe he was too pretty, as opposed to handsome, to be the Doctor.  I expect my Doctors to be a bit odd looking.  As an aside, I don't like the gay stuff interjected by Russell Davies, but that's another matter.

I have a bit of catching up to do.  I  have to finish all of David Tennant's episodes as well as Matt Smith's.

The Brilliance of Shameless

Shameless has been one o the most successful British TV series of the past decade & its also been one of the most controversial.

Conservatives seem to think its a fly on the wall documentary about welfare spongers & left seem to think its a piss take of poor people.

Curtis's Critique of Ayn Rand

Over the past 20 years Adam Curtis has made some interesting documentary series, such as Century of Self & the Power of Nightmares.

His current documentary series entitled All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace kicked off last week & it began with a critique of Ayn Rand.

Actually libertarians could learn from the warning in Curtis's last documentary series The Trap

Shadow Line

Brilliantly scripted, brilliantly directed, brilliantly acted...

a unique social experiment, as he persuades one street in Preston to give up all council services for six weeks.

Brazil v. Fight Club: Your Thoughts

The top of my netflix queue

Now normally I don't have a lot of time for film.  However, after a recent discussion with Sophia Botha, I decided to make it a priority to watch Terry Gilliam's work of renown, Brazil as well as the Brad Pitt/Edward Norton film Fight Club.  I have yet to watch them, but both films have been put to the top of my queue on Netflix.  But as I don't have either of the films in my possession at the moment, I thought I'd ask my fellow conspirators for a comparative literary analysis of the films.

Atlas Shrugged: A Review by J. Neil Schulman

from Rational Review, here is J. Neil Schulman's review of Atlas Shrugged part 1.

First Impressions of Atlas Shrugged: Part 1

Here is the excerpt that really brought the value of the movie to me.  I plan to see it, if it is shown in my area.

There is, in the movie, a new railroad bridge made out of a new kind of steel - lighter, stronger, and cheaper than steel - and this bridge is elegantly simple.

Atlas Shrugged: Part 1 is that bridge.

If you've loved the novel and understand the limits of independent film, you should appreciate the film adaptation.

Screw The Oscars Viva The Republic

It might of won 4 Oscars including best Director, Best Actor & Best Picture, but I found the Kings Speech incredibly boring & am I the only who did?

Christopher Hitchens wrote a piece last month criticizing the film for not being historically incorrect http://www.slate.com/id/2282194/. Well Braveheart was historically inaccurate (in fact seriously inaccurate) but I can’t deny that I thought it was a great film.

Okay I’ll admit being as I’m a hardcore republican I’m fed up with Hollywood lording awards on films that are flattering about the British monarchy, particularly as it imbeds a false impression of the British monarchy upon the masses etc & as a consequence there are political views opposing the monarchy that get emotively shouted down just ought heard.

New BBC sci-fi drama 'Outcasts'

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00x8fw4 first episode was on last night & it looks as if the BBC has spent big bucks on this series & it looks as if its going to explore some interesting ideas.

The Movie Thread

I thought it about time this forum had a thread where people can recommend movies they’ve recently seen or criticize films they’ve recently seen.

V versus The Event

It seems alien invasions are currently the fashion for blockbuster US TV series.

We already had the first season of V & now there’s The Event

I know people around these parts liked V but personally I prefer The Event as its a lot more ambiguous as to what the aliens intentions happen to be.

Britain’s Trillion Pound Horror Story

90 minutes of the most libertarian thing that’s been on British television all year

If you’re not a libertarian before you watched this documentary you will be after watching it

I'll post a link when the program is posted online

Barbara Billingsley R.I.P.

Barbara Billingsley, who played June Cleaver on Leave It To Beaver, has died.

Here's her famous scene from "Airplane".

Kevin McCarthy

Just this year, I got "Body Snatchers" from Netflix.  I wanted to watch it for the umpteenth time.  This disk had a nice, but short, interview with McCarthy.   I was still holding out hope that he would be immortal like the college professor, Prof. Walter Jameson, he played in "The Twilight Zone".

BBC’s New Sherlock Holmes Adaptation

It began last Sunday & its in fact rather good.

They’ve transplanted the whole thing to modern day London & Sherlock Holmes is being played as a somewhat Aspergers odd ball.

Something people might want to check out.

Whedons' Musical

I just watched Nathan Fillion and Neil Patrick Harris in a Joss Whedon production called Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog.  It was pretty damn funny.

DYK that Joss's Brother is named Jed, and he scored this flick?  Weird, but funny, and that is what it was designed to be.

Space Quest

Hey Guys:

Was thinking about an old computer game I used to play on my 486 called space quest!

Does anyone remember this game? It came out of sierra software in the 80s and 90s.

One of the best textline computer games I ever played.

Just had a convo with Furb he reckons it reminded him of red dwarf! I'm so down with that.

Disappointing no one has written a space quest movie on the misadventures of Roger Wilco. Would be really cool to see something like that.

I seem to recall particularly the joke they had in the game where Roger wilco was moving around the game and Vader and Skywalker having a fight in the halls. This sort of humour totally rocks!

Check out the SQ fansite @ http://www.spacequest.net/

cheers,
