When I read the headline, I was sure it was from the Onion.  If this is true, then we know that financial ruin is from definitely by design, not from simple ignorance.

No I think its ignorance being as the government really have no understanding as to whats really going on.

The British government want people to spend us out the present economic slump so they lower VAT (sales tax). Now I am all in favour of tax cuts but lowering VAT is going to do nothing to encourage people to spend because people do not have any money spend currently or are scared to spend fearing whether they will have a job tomorrow.

Every time I think the state couldn't prove us (libertarians) right any more thoroughly, they prove me wrong on that one point.
