You'd think the police would be more thankful that people were better able to protect themselves as it should mean less work for them.

Precisely! I just had the chance to talk to our friend Seth Cohn, who is now a Representative in the NH Legislature, and he had the same thought!

I asked him why he thought the cops worked so hard to stop the bill, and he said he had a feeling it was about power, pure and simple.

Scary to think, but I suspect he's right. The "enlightened" State functionaries know better than we trogs in the populace, it seems, eh?
