Having seen your talk about the Firefly series (on YouTube) and finding out that you wrote for Star Trek, I'm curious as to what your thoughts are about the politics of Star Trek and the recent Galactica series. Have you ever done a podcast on this topic?

BTW, I love Paper Planes!

Hey!

Well, I have to tell you, I think that since X-Files returned, and Joss Whedon got going on TV, there's really been no down time for Sci-fi on TV. Now that Dr. Who is back, with Torchwood as a great spin-off, and Supernatural is out there, and Lost is on, and... I could go on, but I need to just mention that RED DWARF is coming back!!! YEAH! Anyway, I think Sci-fi and supernatural entertainment (and I don't mean a Russ Meyer film!) is in great shape!

On the subject of Trek. The Rodenberry model is very socialistic, but Jeri Taylor and Brannon Braga, at Voyager, were much more realistic. Brannon actually recgonized my "Reason" magazine shirt one time. I dunno their politics, but occasionally there would be a pro-liberty program. The Borg seem to have been modeled after the Cybermen, and the fight for individuality was always big fr them. The Federation needed to be challenged, and I actually had an idea to introduce a very bad element into the Federation mythos. The only trouble is that Rodenberry's utopian view was such that they would never completely challenge the legitimacy of the UFP.

I can't say I've been able to see Galactica, and I really want to! I have the first season on DVD, but have yet to be able to watch! Heck, I just got "Shogun" on DVD, and have all the seasons of the return of Dr. Who, and I've only been able to watch a couple episodes in about a month! Ouch!

How do you feel TV sci fi treats liberty?

Thanks Gard for introducing me to the firefly series. After hearing you mention it a few times on FTL I had to check it out and it became my obsession. I'm kicking myself for not catching the first time around but the major question I have is why some shows that have strong libertarian leanings have a short life span on air? I recently watched the series Jericho which I would never think of having a pro-freedom message but as I got deeper into the series the elements of self governance began to surface. Is it the public or the networks that determine the fate of a show?

Have to admit, I wasn't sure about Firefly at first. Spaceships that fly through space without emitting a sound put me off at first. Got into it gradually.

Have to say tho, I never realized about the episode that makes direct references to Libertarianism re: self defense philosophy. I watched that throughout the story without even realizing until later, very slick!

Doctor Who deserves a hats off. I was a fan of the 1970's Dr Who, when it used to get shown on Australia's socialist leaning ABC Television.

The most recent Doctor Who (David Tennent) is a good actor, but I think he got type-cast by a Project he did about the life of "Cassanova". Perhaps I'm wrong, but everything time I watch the new Doctor Who, I keep thinking, why is Cassanova playing the Doctor! LOL.

The most recent Star Trek film was very good, though it is pretty obvious that its in the Star Wars pre-quel mode atm.

I want to see another STNG movie, that explores the new "B" character that was left off from the last STNG film. A re-run of some of the Data oriented pinnochio metaphors and also dealing with collectivist v.s. individualist subject matter might also be interesting from a Liberty standpoint.

It maybe a tough ask because the story's do as has been discussed, fit into a utopian formula. Something out of the box and totally different would be the way to go, time to suspend my simpsonesque comic book guy commentary and make a final comment about the DWARF!

I think its totally cool that the G-man would fly half way round the world just to watch a couple of new episodes of the Dwarf!

Was a fan in my early high school years, forgetten about it in recent times, might be time to re-acquaint myself by buying the DVD box set.
