Obama and Romney Playing with Info Re Oil Drilling and Production

Here is the vid of that portion of the "debate" from David Hassle-Hofstra University. Scroll to about 7 min in to hear them "debate" about energy...

And here is some fact-checking by our friends at Reason...

But a key to this issue is, are the numbers too high, or too low? As you watch the video, notice how many times Prez Obama says "we", as if it's up to the government to produce energy, not the companies and people behind them that risk their capital and lives to find oil and natural gas and coal, get it, and get the final product to the consumers. And notice also that, though the popular assumption might be that consumers want more oil-based energy, the fact remains that the government regulates the energy industries so much one cannot be sure what the consumers really want. The consumers and the providers are kept from communicating properly through the price mechanism, so we can't tell what the "appropriate level" of oil production and refinement might be, etc...

Oh, and here's something to set the record straight on Romney's desire to shut down a coal plant in Mass. He wanted to. That doesnt mean he is against all coal-based energy, but the point is that it shouldn't be HIS, or OBAMA'S decision. Private property and personal damage claims and resolution are the proper way to approach potential polluters, not federal and state grants and immunity from lawsuits or EPA broad-brush penalties. One final thought, Springer, and that is that the claims of deaths due to the coal plant are claims, that is all. While it seems likely, the science simply isn't there yet to support claims that the air pollutants could cause the deaths. For example, after years of trying, researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health could not determine what they suspected to be a link between air partilates that cause asthma reactions, the asthma reactions, and immunologically inspired life-threatening crises such as heart trouble. This is a very difficult field to study, and the science simply isn't there yet.
